Republicans are buying this election.
In the last six weeks, Republicans have outspent Democrats $20 million to $13 million in television advertising, according to an analysis by The New York Times of 56 of the nation’s most competitive House and Senate races. The Republican advantage includes $9 million in spending from outside groups, compared with $3 million from left-leaning interests.
The disparity in spending, particularly from third-party groups, is the central reason Mr. Obama has agreed to step up his fund-raising efforts for the party in the coming weeks, aides said, and why Speaker Nancy Pelosi is asking leading donors to dig deeper.
I've always lurked at DailyKos and I enjoy this site but it's gotten very meta as of late. I don't much care about that, however. The facts are really simple; corporations don't like the regulatory attitude of this administration and democrats in general. For the last eight years, there has been no oversight and we're starting to reap the whirlwind now in our food, our infrastructure, and our industries. That gas line thing in Cali is a good example IMO, similar to the BP thing but in the lives and backyards of ordinary Americans.
I don't think it's a coincidence that corporations are sitting on all this cash and not hiring; I think it was USA today that said 2.5 million people at 70k a year for five years could be hired with the cash that's being hoarded.
I don't think it's a coincidence that this Supreme Court has upended campaign finance and allowed Citizen's United to pass. I think it was plain stupid for the Democrats not to do something about this.
But all that aside; I think it's real clear that if we're going to move forward Democrats need to get actively involved and OFA is the best bet IMO.
Please Get Involved
As frustrated as you may be with this administration, this Congress, and the slow pace of change it can get worst. Imagine a government shut down in this economy? No budget? Budget cuts?
IMO, this election is as important as 2000 was because we do not know the unintended consequences of putting tea party Republicans into power. That scares me, frankly. And given the monetary discrepancies, I think a grassroots uprising is the only way we can hope to affect change. So I hope you'll all join me at OFA to try to make 2010 more like '06 than '00.
